Forensic Overtime Reduction

Opportunity

Monthly overtime tracking indicated a significant increase in overtime hours in 2018, measured in dollars and as a percentage of total monthly hours worked, based on payroll information.

ANALYSIS:

The Forensic Unit Managers identified reasons for the overtime spend by date and employee. Data shows 40% of overtime is due to long term constant obs whilst another 40% of overtime costs are due to sick leave and vacancies.

Aim

Reduce nursing overtime on the Forensic Division from 13% to 9% of total hours worked by Dec, 2018.

Analysis

The Forensic Unit Managers identified reasons for the overtime spend by date and employee. Data shows 40% of overtime is due to long term constant obs whilst another 40% of overtime costs are due to sick leave and vacancies

Conclusions

Whilst the data collected indicates Long term constant obs are the main overtime driver ,we would expect vacancies to be a larger portion. Work is underway to fill vacancies  which will reduce overtime & sick leave. E.g. new grads RN’s, different roster patterns, transition RN’s from non mental health services.
